Museum „Kunsthalle“

The well known Munich museum “Kun…” was reopened in 2001. The production of an unique general image, signage and posters, catalogue titles and graphics for the first six exhibitions was my first job as an independent designer.

Application of the slim font ‚quay sans‘ optically shortens the long name ‚Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung‘. The simple appearance of two different shades of grey is complemented by another colour which relates to the specific exhibition.

Advertisment for the Exhibition ‚Der kühle Blick‘

As part of the design for the exhibition ‚der kühle Blick‘ posters, tickets, booklets, invitations, a flag, large scale adverts, a catalogue and give-aways for the shop were all created. All elements were linked by a common theme of colour and image. The picture detail stirs the curiosity of the viewer; the inside unveils the secret.

Sales Material for the Exhibition ‚loop‘

The exhibition’s theme ‘movie loop’ is mirrored by the promotional material. This motif continuously wraps itself around an advertising pillar or through a pamphlet.

Sales Material for the Exhibition ‚Madame de Pompadour‘

A diminutive intervention draws attention to the well-known painting. Booklets and invitations are decorated with the gold embossed emblem found in the original books.

Sales Material for Exhibitions

More corporate designs were also completed for exhibitions on Monet, Nolde and Nay. A range of posters for Nolde and CD-Covers for Monet are depicted below. A common colour and image is chosen for each exhibition and used throughout the design.

Signage System

The graphic language and material application harmonises with the architecture by Herzog de Meuron and mirrors the branding of the museum. The type designer Juergen Weltin developed a special Pi-font which correlates with the weight and forms of the signage typeface.

Special Signage

For security purposes, it was necessary to restrict the size of bags permitted to be at the exhibitions. A sign was created that would illustrate the dimensions allowed. These were made with removable steel plates to allow quick and easy changing if necessary.

The entrance hall also illustrates the exhibition’s characterising colour. Information is printed onto the wall using a stencil.
